Theory & Formula

What is Trigonometry?

Trigonometry is the study of relationships between angles and sides of triangles. The six trigonometric functions relate angles to ratios of sides in a right triangle.

The Six Trigonometric Functions

Sine (sin):

\(\sin(\theta) = \frac{\text{opposite}}{\text{hypotenuse}}\)

Cosine (cos):

\(\cos(\theta) = \frac{\text{adjacent}}{\text{hypotenuse}}\)

Tangent (tan):

\(\tan(\theta) = \frac{\text{opposite}}{\text{adjacent}} = \frac{\sin(\theta)}{\cos(\theta)}\)

Cosecant (csc):

\(\csc(\theta) = \frac{1}{\sin(\theta)}\)

Secant (sec):

\(\sec(\theta) = \frac{1}{\cos(\theta)}\)

Cotangent (cot):

\(\cot(\theta) = \frac{1}{\tan(\theta)} = \frac{\cos(\theta)}{\sin(\theta)}\)

The Unit Circle

On the unit circle (radius = 1), any angle θ corresponds to a point (x, y) where x = cos(θ) and y = sin(θ).

\(\sin(\theta) = y \text{ (vertical coordinate)}\)\(\cos(\theta) = x \text{ (horizontal coordinate)}\)
