Theory & Formula

The area of a rectangle is the space enclosed by its four sides. It is calculated by multiplying the length by the width.

The perimeter is the total distance around the rectangle, calculated by adding all four sides or using the formula 2(l + w).

Properties
  • Opposite sides are equal and parallel
  • All angles are 90 degrees (right angles)
  • Diagonals are equal in length and bisect each other
  • A square is a special case where l = w
\(A = l \times w, P = 2(l + w)\)

Worked Examples

Example 1

\(l = 8, w = 5 \rightarrow A = 8 \times 5 = 40\) units², \(P = 2(8 + 5) = 26\) units

Example 2

\(l = 12, w = 3 \rightarrow A = 12 \times 3 = 36\) units², \(P = 2(12 + 3) = 30\) units
