Theory & Formula

Newton's Laws & Force

Newton's laws of motion describe the relationship between forces and motion. These fundamental principles form the basis of classical mechanics.

Newton's Second Law

\(F = ma\)

Force equals mass times acceleration. This is the most commonly used equation in physics.

Weight

\(W = mg\)

Weight is the force due to gravity acting on a mass. On Earth, g ≈ 9.8 m/s².

Friction

\(f = \mu N\)

Friction opposes motion and is proportional to the normal force. The coefficient of friction (μ) depends on the surfaces in contact.

Example

A 10 kg object accelerates at 2 m/s². What force is required? F = ma = (10)(2) = 20 N

\(F = ma = (10)(2) = 20 \, \text{N}\)
