Theory & Formula

A percentage is a ratio whose second term is always 100. The term "percent" means parts per hundred. It originates from the Latin phrase per centum, which translates to "per hundred."

We know three variables: percentage (p), percentage part (c) and base (z). They are connected by the formula above.

For example, 12% (read as 'twelve percent') is equivalent to:

  • The fraction 12/100
  • The simplified fraction 3/25
  • The decimal 0.12

Percentages are commonly used to express how large or small one quantity is relative to another. They provide a standardized way to compare proportions and understand relationships between quantities.

\(p = \frac{c}{z} \times 100\)

Worked Examples

Example 1

\(\text{What is 25% of 200?} \rightarrow \frac{25}{100} \times 200 = 50\)

Example 2

\(\text{50 is what percent of 200?} \rightarrow \frac{50}{200} \times 100 = 25\%\)

Example 3

\(\text{25% of what is 50?} \rightarrow \frac{50 \times 100}{25} = 200\)
