Theory & Formula

What is Absolute Value?

The absolute value of a number is its distance from zero on the number line, always positive or zero.

Properties

|x| ≥ 0 for all x:

\(|x| \geq 0\)

|x| = |-x|:

\(|x| = |-x|\)

|xy| = |x| · |y|:

\(|xy| = |x||y|\)

Solving Absolute Value Equations

To solve |expression| = a, split into two cases: expression = a or expression = -a

Example:

\(|2x - 3| = 7\)\(2x - 3 = 7 \text{ or } 2x - 3 = -7\)\(x = 5 \text{ or } x = -2\)
